ZINNIAS
GOTTA LOVE 'EM!

THEY EXHIBIT SUCH VARIETY---AND THE COLORS...WOW!
My first memories of zinnias are small beds of them my Papa planted on each side of his front porch. If Papa planted them, of course they were included in some of my earliest attempts at flower gardening. The fact just came to mind that it was that same Papa who helped me hoe up my first flowerbed (pause for happy memory).
Zinnias are the perfect old-timey flower. They attract hummingbirds and butterflies like magnets! The only down-side I've found concerning them is that if planted from seeds, in our zone, after the danger of frost has passed (April 15th.) they don't bloom until close to July 4th. They seem to try to apologetically compensate for their late start by faithfully blooming profusely up into the fall. A couple of years ago I discovered that there's a mini variety of these beloved flowers. They grow from ten inches to two feet, instead of the two to three feet the normal-sized ones reach. I planted some of them today in a tray indoors. This is my first time to grow the minis.I'm hoping by starting them early, the first blooms will appear at least by the beginning of June. We'll see :-) Whether you're more into veggies or you are one who prefers your sweat to go toward producing flowers, Happy Gardening season to you!
