Relationship Between Salvation and Works

1) “While good works can never buy salvation, they can help sell others on its genuineness.”

“Two men went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you God that I am not like other people – cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God...” Luke 18:10-14 NLT

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 NASB

2) “Works can’t get us into heaven, but idleness can keep us out.”

“As Paul talked about righteousness self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, ‘That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.’” Acts 24:25

3) “A branch without a root, can’t bring forth fruit.”

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NIV

4) “Works minus salvation equals a proud sinner. Salvation minus works equals a shamed saint.”

“Two men went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you God that I am not like other people – cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!” Luke 18:10-11 NLT

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:10-13 NIV

5) “In the end we may find that our most worthy works weren’t the big ones we started out to accomplish, but the little ones we stopped to do along the way.”

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” Matthew 10:42 NIV
